Position Overview

Autodesk is seeking a Principal API Designer who'll join our Product Development and Manufacturing Solutions' (PDMS) content design team. Reporting to our Experience Design Manager, you'll help us craft engaging content for internal development teams and for our customers, in addition to product experiences that promote customer knowledge and skill development. You'll work with software developers and experience designers to define components within our manufacturing solutions API and create the content to help our internal development teams adopt the new technology. Content may include: internal development-facing documentation, customer-facing online help, in-product learning, user interface content, and product messaging.

As a Principal API Designer, you possess strong experience with API design and documentation that you can show to in your portfolio. You possess strong technical knowledge with APIs and can speak to how APIs work within a broader digital platform. Your work will improve worldwide product adoption and retention. Responsibilities

  • Understand technical aspects of our software and the supporting API to help translate this into consumable artefacts, helping both internal and external teams learn how to adopt the new technology

  • Design and layout content sites that help the developer persona get up-and-running with our API seamlessly

  • Write and organise content that provides connections between the high-level descriptions of the technology and the very technical low-level documentation of it

  • Apply content design skills to organize and present existing content created by software engineers, architects, and product managers

  • Create internal and external customer-facing content for the software

  • Participate in user research to test and iterate on content solutions to support data-driven design and evolution

  • Partner with stakeholders to understand key requirements. Stay informed of project changes, gather information for estimating content development efforts, and update media

  • Contribute to technical reviews of designs and content

  • Provide feedback and support for cross-functional teams to improve consistency and accuracy through all product-related content

  • Work with agile teams to provide learnability reviews and content to support new features and workflows

  • Collaborate with our teams on content planning and content strategy for learning sites and associated channels to align our company goals

  • Participate in a community of practice for content design

Minimum Qualifications

  • University degree in computer science (or related field) or equivalent experience will be considered

  • 4+ years professional working experience in software documentation (including experience with APIs)

  • Familiarity with web programming languages such as JavaScript, Typescript, Java, and Python

  • Experience with Agile development processes and methodologies, such as Scrum, Kanban

  • Successfully completed two or more commercial software development cycles

  • Experience communicating and describing technical concepts to a variety of audiences
